How the Sun turns its energy into a scorching corona
In short: The Sun's atmosphere undergoes a violent transformation that remains one of space's most enduring mysteries. Scientists are using a high-resolution spectrograph to peer into the transition region, where magnetic fields and plasma collide to heat the solar atmosphere to millions of degrees.
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) mission focuses on a specific, poorly understood area of the Sun: the transition region. This zone acts as a complex dynamic interface between the photosphere and the corona. This confined area represents a vital hurdle for solar science, as nearly all non-radiative energy exiting the Sun transforms into radiation and heat there.
The primary challenge for researchers is the interplay of forces. In this region, magnetic fields and plasma exert comparable forces, creating a chaotic environment. IRIS was designed to fill a crucial gap in Sun-Earth connection studies by tracing how energy and plasma flow into the corona and heliosphere. By capturing high-resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectra and images, the mission observes the non-thermal energy that creates the solar wind and space weather.
To achieve this, IRIS utilizes a high-resolution UV imaging spectrograph capable of capturing data at a spatial resolution of 1/3 arcsec and a temporal resolution of 1 second. The mission, led by Principal Investigator Alan Title at the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center, provides the data necessary to understand how the solar atmosphere is energized. This research is vital for predicting space weather, which can impact technology and human activity on Earth.
Launching from a Pegasus rocket via air-lift, the project started 39,000 feet over the Pacific Ocean close to Vandenberg Air Force Base. Since its deployment, IRIS has provided unprecedented images of solar eruptions and flares, helping to explain the heating mechanisms of the solar atmosphere.
