The speed of global warming may be more dangerous than its heat

Is Earth's Largest Heat (Amoc) Approaching A Tipping Point? · 14:08 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Earth's massive Atlantic heat engine is showing signs of struggle. While scientists once focused on how hot the planet gets, new research suggests that how fast we get there might be the true trigger for a catastrophic collapse of our climate's primary conveyor belt.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) functions as a planetary heat engine. It moves warm surface water northward from the tropics toward Western Europe and carries cold, dense water southward. This system is fundamental to regulating global temperatures and weather patterns; without it, the relatively mild conditions of the North Atlantic could be drastically altered.

For years, researchers estimated that the AMOC might reach a tipping point and collapse at approximately +4°C of global warming. However, new findings from Utrecht University suggest this threshold is not fixed. The study indicates that the stability of the circulation depends heavily on the rate of change. In simulations where CO2 increased slowly (0.5 ppm per year), the AMOC remained stable even beyond +5°C. Conversely, under a faster warming scenario (2.5 ppm per year), which mirrors current rates, the system collapsed at just +2°C.

Evidence of this potential weakening is already appearing in the form of a "cold blob" south of Greenland and Iceland. While most of the world warms, this specific patch is cooling because the AMOC is delivering less heat to that region. Evidence gathered via direct meteorological monitoring suggests that climate change and polar melting might cause the conveyor belt to shift from its robust current flow into a significantly diminished phase over several decades.

This shift matters because it represents a non-linear climate risk. If the AMOC crosses its tipping point, the redistribution of heat across the planet could change rapidly, making the transition to a new climate state far more abrupt than gradual warming alone would suggest.
