Jupiter's Great Red Spot may be starving for fuel
In short: Jupiter's iconic Great Red Spot is shrinking, but why? New research suggests the massive anticyclone might be losing its primary source of energy. By simulating atmospheric interactions, scientists have identified a potential mechanism that explains how this celestial giant maintains its size—or fails to.
The Great Red Spot is the solar system's largest windstorm, a high-pressure anticyclone in Jupiter's southern hemisphere. It spans more than 10,000 miles wide and features winds exceeding 200 miles per hour, blowing in a counterclockwise direction. While it has been a fixture of the planet for centuries, it has been noticeably shrinking for about 50 years. By 2016, the area's width had shrunk to a mere 14 degrees, down from 40 degrees during the 1800s.
To understand this decline, researchers at Yale University, North Carolina State University, and the University of Louisville used the Explicit Planetary Isentropic-Coordinate (EPIC) model. Developed in the 1990s, this 3D atmospheric model allowed the team to simulate how the Great Red Spot interacts with smaller, transient storms. By comparing simulations with and without these smaller storms, the team discovered that the Great Red Spot actually relies on a 'diet' of smaller weather systems to maintain its scale.
The study suggests that a decline in the frequency or intensity of these smaller storms may be causing the Great Red Spot to lose its fuel source and shrink. Interestingly, the researchers based some of their modeling on high-pressure systems observed in Earth's own atmosphere. While the spot remains a mystery regarding its exact origin and the reason for its red color, these findings provide a new framework for understanding how planetary giants sustain their most famous features.
