Could the entire observable universe exist inside a single black hole?
In short: Recent observations of distant galaxies suggest a strange, coordinated cosmic dance. Instead of a random distribution of spins, a majority of early galaxies appear to rotate in the same direction, hinting that our cosmos might be the interior of a massive black hole.
The theory of black hole cosmology, sometimes called Schwarzschild cosmology, proposes that our observable universe is the interior of a black hole located within a larger parent universe. This idea rests on striking mathematical parallels: both the universe and black holes feature a singularity—a point of intense density—and an event horizon, a boundary beyond which nothing can escape. Some researchers even note that the radius of our observable universe matches what it would be for a black hole with the mass of our entire cosmos.
New evidence from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has added weight to this speculation. Analyzing 263 galaxies as part of the JADES survey, computer scientist Lior Shamir found that roughly two-thirds of these early galaxies rotate clockwise, similar to the Milky Way, while only one-third rotate counterclockwise. In a truly random universe, scientists would expect a 5-50/50 split. This preferred direction of rotation suggests the universe may have been born with an inherent spin, a feature consistent with being inside a black hole.
While the implications are enormous, the scientific community remains cautious. Physicists like Niayesh Afshordi note that while the idea is reasonable, the challenge lies in making the specific details work. Other theories, such as Lee Smolin's 'cosmological natural selection,' suggest a more reproductive model where every black hole in our universe produces a new 'baby universe' inside it. Whether we are part of a vast, evolving lineage of universes or simply observing a cosmic coincidence remains one of the most profound questions in modern astrophysics.
