How command of the International Space Station transfers between international crews

ISS Helm's Handoff · 10:06 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: This video captures the formal handoff of the International Space Station command from one expedition leader to another. It provides a rare look at the procedural and symbolic transition of authority on the orbital outpost as crews rotate through their long-duration missions.

On September 15, Expedition 32 Commander Gennady Padalka of Roscosmos officially passed station command to NASA astronaut Suni Williams. This ceremony marked the transition between expedition crews, a routine but essential process for maintaining continuous operations aboard the orbital facility.

The handover occurred shortly before the departure of Padalka and flight engineers Joe Acaba and Sergei Revin, who returned to Earth on September 17 via a Soyuz TMA-04M spacecraft, landing on the Kazakhstan steppe. Following the departure, Williams continued her mission alongside Aki Hoshide and Yuri Malenchenko until the arrival of three additional crew members on October 17.
