Simulating the orbital reality of the International Space Station
In short: Spaceflight is a game of physics, but for Kerbal Space Program players, it is also a feat of engineering. As the International Space Station prepares to mark two decades of continuous human occupation, the community is bridging the gap between digital simulation and orbital reality.
The International Space Station (ISS) began its journey with the launch of the first modules in 1998. By November 2, 2024, the station will celebrate 20 years of continuous crewed flight. Since its inception, the orbiting complex has hosted well over 200 astronauts and cosmonauts. The first long-duration mission, Expedition 1, arrived at the station on November 2, 2000, marking a shift toward long-term human presence in low Earth orbit. Early station operations were primarily defined by construction tasks. Over time, the focus shifted toward scientific research. NASA is currently seeking more private partnerships. These may eventually allow privately funded astronauts to visit the facility.
The physics-based simulator Kerbal Space Program, released in 2011, has gained recognition for its commitment to realistic orbital mechanics. The game mimics complex realities such as the necessity of multiple rocket stages to reach orbit and the varying speeds required at different altitudes. This realism has allowed the community to participate in high-fidelity recreations, such as simulating the SpaceX Demo-2 commercial crew mission which launched in May of this year. The game requires players to manage different speeds at various altitudes. It also forces users to account for payload delivery. Players can attempt specific challenges like reaching the Mun. Some tasks involve building a three-person SSTO.
To commemorate the ISS anniversary, the game's developer, Private Division, is challenging players to create accurate recreations of the station. Participants are asked to film 'Kerbonauts' performing real-world activities like spacewalks, science experiments, and eating snacks. These submissions will be reviewed for engineering accuracy, with experts like Dr. Gary H. Kitmacher scheduled to comment on the technical feasibility of the community's designs. This intersection of gaming and aerospace highlights how simulation serves as a tool for understanding the rigors of space exploration. The developer chose the hashtag LaunchAmerica for a previous project. They shared their favorite community picks directly with NASA. The event will include a Reddit Ask Me Anything session. This will explore if Kerbals are truly out there.
