Can a solar-powered plane fly forever by chasing the sun around a planet?
In short: Scott Manley demonstrates a solar-powered aircraft in Kerbal Space Program designed to match the rotational speed of the planet Kerbin. By maintaining a specific velocity, the plane stays in perpetual daylight, effectively circling the globe indefinitely.
To achieve a state of permanent sunlight, the aircraft must travel at 175 meters per second, matching Kerbin's rotational speed at the equator. This feat is made possible using the Firespitter mod, which provides the necessary electrically driven propeller technology.
The journey requires at least 6 hours of continuous flight. Manley utilized the MechJeb autopilot system to maintain the flight path, allowing the craft to remain aloft while the pilot was away.
