A record-breaking sprint to the International Space Station

Launch Day For New ISS Crew · 31:49 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: On October 1, a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft is set to embark on a mission that could rewrite the history books. This Crew-13 flight is not just another delivery to orbit; it is designed to complete the transit from launch to docking in an unprecedentedly short window.

From Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's Space Launch Complex 40, the Crew-13 flight intends to dock roughly 7 hours and 50 minutes after liftoff. If successful, this would represent the fastest trip to the International Space Station by a U.S. spacecraft in the history of the orbital complex. The mission is scheduled to depart at 11:10 a.m. EDT. This rapid transit is part of a broader schedule that includes arrival coverage starting at 5:20 p.m.

An international group makes up the crew: Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, CSA astronaut Joshua Kutryk, plus NASA astronauts Luke Delaney and Jessica Watkins. The team will perform a handover with the Crew-12 members at the Harmony module once they arrive, with the latter group's Earth return set for Monday, October 5 at the earliest. The spacecraft will target the forward-facing port of the Harmony module for its arrival. Following the docking, the crew will open the hatch at 8:45 p.m. to begin their mission.

While the Crew-13 mission focuses on a rapid arrival, other expeditions demonstrate the long-term nature of station residency. For instance, the Expedition 40/41 crew, including Soyuz Commander Max Suraev, NASA Flight Engineer Reid Wiseman, and ESA's Alexander Gerst, have previously managed much longer stays of approximately 5.5 months aboard the laboratory.

The logistics of such launches involve intense coordination between agencies like NASA, SpaceX, and the CSA. Pre-launch activities include press conferences featuring leaders such as NASA's Dr. Lori Glaze and SpaceX's William Gerstenmaier to brief the public on the complex maneuvers required for orbital rendezvous. The pre-launch news conference is slated for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30. This event will also feature NASA's Dana Weigel and CSA's Mathieu Caron.
