How Mars500 astronauts used creative cooking to survive isolation

Martian pizza and other creative cookery with Mars500 · 3:23 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: To celebrate one full year inside a simulated interplanetary spaceship, the Mars500 crew turned to inventive cookery. This video explores the culinary creativity used by the crew to combat the monotony of long-term isolation.

The Mars50/ crew spent a year living in modules designed to simulate the experience of deep space travel. As the simulation progressed toward its conclusion, the crew faced intentional communication delays to mimic the distance from Earth. By September, the simulated ship was only two months away from Earth, with communication lags gradually reducing as they approached.

The footage highlights how the crew used meals, such as Martian pizza, to celebrate milestones and maintain morale during their period of isolation.
