How mixed reality helps astronauts conduct quantum physics experiments in orbit

NASA is using mixed reality headsets to bridge the gap between astronauts on the International Space Station and researchers on Earth. This technology allows for real-time collaboration on the Cold Atom Lab, a facility designed to study atoms at temperatures near absolute zero.

The Cold Atom Lab is a specialized facility aboard the International Space Station that investigates the fundamental properties of atoms by chilling them to nearly absolute zero, the lowest temperature matter can achieve. To maintain the facility's cutting-edge performance, astronaut Megan McArthur recently utilized a Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality headset.

While mixed reality has previously supported astronauts during solitary tasks, this instance marked the first time the technology was employed to facilitate direct interaction between crew members and ground-based teams. The Cold Atom Lab team conducted this operation while adhering to established COVID-19 safety protocols.
