A new era of lunar exploration is moving beyond government borders

Moon exploration is coming back in a big way · 6:47 · Video: Verge Science · Watch at the source

In short: The Apollo missions were a monumental feat, but the next chapter of moon exploration looks fundamentally different. We are transitioning from a period of relative quiet to a bustling lunar economy where private companies and global alliances will join national space agencies to establish a sustained human presence.

NASA’s Artemis program serves as the primary vehicle for this return, aiming to use the Moon as a stepping stone for eventually reaching Mars. Central to this effort is the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft. While the SLS provides the heavy-lift power, Orion is designed to sustain crews during deep space travel. A critical milestone was reached in November 2022 with an uncrewed test flight of these systems, which evaluated ground operations without full life support.

The timeline for human return is accelerating through specific milestones. Artemis II, scheduled for April 2026, will carry four astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—on a nearly 10-day voyage around the Moon. This mission will mark the first crewed flight of Orion in over 50 years. Following this, Artemis III in 2027 will serve as a high-stakes demonstration to test commercial human landing systems from SpaceX and Blue Origin before NASA targets consistent lunar landings starting in 2028.

What distinguishes this era is the shift toward a 'global alliance' and private sector involvement. Unlike the Apollo era, new players see significant economic potential on the lunar surface. To support long-term habitation, NASA is exploring infrastructure needs like nuclear reactors for power. This transition reflects a broader national strategy to maintain leadership while fostering international cooperation through frameworks like the Artemis Accords, which currently include 60 participating nations.
