The solar system's most powerful explosion occurred on a moon, not a star
In short: While solar flares are often cited as the most violent events in our neighborhood, a recent discovery on Jupiter's moon Io revealed a volcanic eruption of unprecedented scale. This massive outburst was so powerful it dwarfed historical terrestrial disasters and revealed a hidden, interconnected magma network.
On December 27, 2024, NASA's Juno spacecraft captured the most powerful volcanic eruption ever witnessed in our solar system. Occurring on Jupiter's moon Io, the event released an estimated 140 to 260 terawatts of energy. To put this in perspective, it was between three and five times more powerful than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, which had a power of 52 terawatts. The previous record for Io was held by the volcano Surt in 2001, which released about 80 terawatts.
What makes this event unique is its synchrony. Instead of one solitary blast, several concurrent eruptions occurred at once, spanning a vast 40,400 square miles (65,000 square kilometers). This suggests that the eruption was not isolated but propagated through a sub-surface network of interconnected magma reservoirs. Researchers from the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) suggest the moon's mantle may act like a sponge, filled with pores of magma that allow a single enormous eruptive event to travel hundreds of kilometers beneath the surface.
The engine behind this violence is Jupiter itself. The planet's gravitational tidal forces exert a vice-like grip on Io, squeezing and flexing its interior. This constant friction generates enough heat to keep the moon's mantle molten, fueling approximately 400 active volcanoes. Although X-class solar flares generate energy equivalent to a billion hydrogen bombs, this particular Io volcanic disaster marks a distinct geological achievement within our solar system.
