The asteroid Bennu holds the chemical secrets of a 4.5 billion-year-old world

Earth's geological history has buried the clues to our origins. To find the truth, NASA looked to a primitive asteroid. Now, fragments returned from the OSIRIS-REx mission are revealing a prehistoric, salty environment that once harbored the essential ingredients for life.

Tracing the origins of life on Earth is notoriously difficult because our planet's surface is constantly being rewritten. Processes like plate tectonics, the water cycle, and the biological activity of life itself have buried the ancient chemical signatures we need to study. To bypass this geological erasure, scientists turned their attention to the solar system's primitive leftovers: asteroids.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission provided a unique opportunity to bypass Earth's shifting crust. The spacecraft successfully gathered pristine material from the asteroid Bennu in 2020 and delivered these samples to Earth in 2023. Since the scientists first opened the sample canister approximately 16 months ago, they have been meticulously analyzing the asteroid's fragments to understand the early solar system.

The findings are profound. Analysis of the Bennu samples has uncovered evidence of a wet, salty environment that existed roughly 4.5 billion years ago. More importantly, the team has identified organic molecules within the rocks—the fundamental molecular building blocks required for life to emerge. These fragments act as a cosmic time capsule, preserving the conditions of a lost world from the dawn of our solar system.

By studying these organic compounds, astrochemists like José Aponte are able to examine the chemical precursors of life in a state that has remained largely untouched by the destructive forces found on Earth. This research offers our most detailed look yet at the chemical landscape that existed during the solar system's infancy, providing a window into the potential for life to take root.
