A mysterious ribbon marks the edge of our solar system

In short: Our Sun creates a protective magnetic bubble called the heliosphere, shielding us from dangerous cosmic rays. But NASA's IBEX mission has discovered something unexpected: a bright, winding ribbon of unknown origin that could fundamentally change our understanding of the boundaries of our solar system.

The heliosphere is a magnetic bubble inflated by the solar wind—a stream of particles flowing out from the Sun. This structure encases all the planets and separates our solar system from the interstellar medium. By acting as a shield, the heliosphere protects Earth and astronauts from high-energy galactic cosmic rays. This magnetic envelope serves as a vital barrier between our solar domain and the vastness of interstellar space.

To map this boundary, NASA launched the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) in October 2008. Unlike traditional telescopes that capture light, IBEX uses specialized instruments to detect energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). These high-energy particles are produced at the very edge of our solar system and travel toward Earth from beyond the orbit of Pluto. These unique sensors allow the spacecraft to monitor the solar system's perimeter from its orbital position around Earth.

The journey of these particles can take anywhere from a single month to as long as 11 years. By collecting these particles, scientists can observe how the solar wind interacts with the material of interstellar space. While IBEX has already produced the first all-sky map of the heliosphere, the discovery of a bright, winding ribbon has introduced a new mystery that researchers are still working to solve. This unexpected feature was identified during the mission's initial all-sky mapping of the heliosphere.

The IBEX spacecraft is a small satellite, roughly the size of a bus tire, weighing approximately 176 pounds (80 kilograms). Launched via a Pegasus XL rocket, it continues to orbit Earth to provide a clearer picture of the limits of our celestial neighborhood. This compact explorer was deployed into space using a Pegasus XL launch vehicle.
