NASA selects 10 candidates from a pool of over 8,000 applicants
In short: The race to reach the Moon and Mars is intensifying. NASA has introduced its 2025 astronaut candidate class, a group of ten individuals selected from a massive pool of more than 8,000 applicants. These specialists are beginning a rigorous two-year training program to prepare for the next era of deep space exploration.
The 2025 astronaut candidate class, introduced on Monday, September 22, represents a significant milestone for the agency. After a rigorous contest involving over 8,000 candidates from the United States, these ten individuals will undergo almost two years of technical instruction. This curriculum is designed to prepare them for complex operations aboard the International Space Station and upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon. Acting Administrator Sean Duffy welcomed the group during a ceremony at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. This 24th class reported for duty in mid-September.
The training regimen is diverse and demanding, covering essential skills such as robotics, geology, and foreign languages. Candidates must also master land and water survival, space medicine, and physiology. To simulate the realities of spaceflight, the group will conduct simulated spacewalks and fly high-performance jets. Such training is crucial to the agency's objective of maintaining a permanent human presence outside low Earth orbit. The curriculum also includes specialized instruction in space medicine and physiology.
Upon graduation, these candidates will join NASA's active astronaut corps. This cohort will assist scientific and exploratory missions to Mars, the Moon, and low Earth orbit. As the agency transitions toward commercial space stations, these astronauts will be at the forefront of humanity's next great leaps into the solar system, bridging the gap between current research and deep space exploration. One notable member is Ben Bailey, a U.S. Army chief warrant officer. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering and has extensive flight experience.
