NASA is preparing to power the first nuclear-propelled journey to Mars
In short: Traditional liquid-fueled rockets are reaching their limits for deep-space travel. To reach the Red Planet faster and more efficiently, NASA is turning to fission. By 2028, the agency plans to launch a spacecraft that uses nuclear power to push humanity further into the cosmos.
The Space Reactor-1 Freedom mission, targeted for launch in late 2028, represents a world first: the first interplanetary spacecraft powered by nuclear propulsion. This initiative aims to demonstrate that fission power can provide the safe, abundant, and continuous energy required for long-duration missions. By utilizing nuclear electric propulsion, NASA intends to create fuel-efficient spacecraft capable of supporting ambitious science and human exploration to Mars and beyond. The mission serves as a critical stepping stone in a deliberate sequence. By flying the reactor first—without the immediate complexity of a lunar landing—NASA seeks to reduce nuclear flight risks, qualify the necessary supply chain, and build a specialized workforce. This effort is designed to establish a domestic nuclear-space industrial base that will eventually scale to power permanent lunar outposts, specifically providing power to the Moon Base during periods of darkness or in areas where solar energy is insufficient.
While the primary goal is to deliver the SkyFall payload to Mars, the mission's ultimate destination remains open. The spacecraft will deploy three helicopters, evolved from the heritage Ingenuity design, to collect data on subsurface features and identify potential water ice sources. These helicopters will use ground-penetrating radar and imagers to map terrain. If successful, this technology will pave the way for faster, more capable missions that can travel much further than traditional craft can manage.
