The final voyage of a historic era in space travel
In short: NASA astronaut Kate Rubins is preparing for a mission that marks a turning point in human spaceflight history. As she prepares to launch from Kazakhstan, her journey represents the closing chapter of one international partnership and the dawn of a new commercial era.
As Kate Rubins prepared for her flight on October 14, 2020, she was positioned at a unique historical crossroads. Launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Russian Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft, her mission served as a potential final flight for NASA astronauts using Russian rockets. This transition is driven by the rapid growth of domestic commercial launch capabilities in the United States, such as SpaceX's Crew Dragon vehicle. While Rubins expressed that the Commercial Crew Program does not signal an end to international cooperation, it fundamentally shifts how NASA maintains its presence on the International Space Station (ISS).
During her stay aboard the ISS, Rubins will participate in a milestone celebration of the station’s 20th anniversary of continuous human presence. Her mission also serves as a bridge between eras; she is tasked with welcoming the first operational commercial crew vehicle to the station. This transition highlights a shift from government-led transport to a more diversified model involving private partners like SpaceX, who successfully conducted the Demo-2 mission in May 2020 and prepared for subsequent Crew-1 missions.
Rubins brings a significant scientific pedigree to this transition. Having graduated from UC San Diego with a molecular biology degree in 1999, this biochemist achieved a milestone in 2016 as the initial individual to perform DNA sequencing whilst orbiting Earth. Since then, she has conducted hundreds of experiments on the ISS. Her current work focuses on how microgravity—the state of being in continuous free fall—can be leveraged to advance human health and genomics, providing insights that can be translated into medical applications for life on Earth.
