How magnetic explosions in space can disrupt life on Earth
When the solar wind hits our magnetic shield, it triggers violent energy releases. This video explores NASA's TRACERS mission, which investigates the mysterious process of magnetic reconnection and its power to impact our global technology.
The TRACERS mission—Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites—is designed to study magnetic reconnection. This occurs when the Sun's magnetic field, carried by the solar wind at speeds exceeding one million miles per hour, collides with Earth's magnetosphere. The resulting interaction causes magnetic field lines to snap and realign, an explosive event that can release energy equivalent to the total daily consumption of the United States.
By flying twin satellites through the polar cusps—funnel-shaped openings in our magnetic field—the mission aims to observe how these explosions fling particles into our atmosphere. Such space weather can cause breathtaking auroras, but also poses risks to power grids, communications, and GPS accuracy, as seen during the intense geomagnetic storm of May 2024.
