Einstein's rules hold firm across hundreds of millions of light-years

New Cosmic Data Just Closed the Door on Alternative Gravity Theories · 15:28 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: Could gravity behave differently on a cosmic scale? For decades, scientists have tested whether our standard laws of physics break down at the edges of the universe. New data from the largest three-dimensional map of the cosmos suggests that Einstein's predictions remain remarkably intact.

Researchers recently conducted one of the most stringent tests to date of Albert Einstein’s General Relativity. By analyzing how nearly six million galaxies cluster over a period of up to 11 billion years, an international team used data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). The study aimed to see if modified gravity theories—proposed as alternatives to explain the universe's accelerating expansion—could account for these motions without the need for dark matter.

The results proved clear: galactic clustering aligns with our primary gravitational framework. Specifically, a study published in Physical Review Letters examined how galaxy clusters move toward one another across hundreds of millions of light-years. The results confirmed that gravity weakens with distance exactly as predicted by Isaac Newton’s 300-year-old rule and Einstein's later refinements. This reinforces the existence of dark matter, as modified gravity theories intended to replace it are now significantly narrowed or ruled out.

While these results solidify the standard model, some nuances remain. Data from DESI also suggests that dark energy—the mysterious ingredient driving expansion—might not be constant but could evolve over time. This has led theorists to explore alternative models like teleparallel f(T) gravity. Unlike General Relativity, which relies on spacetime curvature, teleparallel gravity uses torsion. Research published in 2025 by Istanbul Technical University investigated a theoretical zone where dark energy density remained negative for several billion years of early cosmic history prior to becoming positive.
