A three billion mile journey to the edge of our solar system

New Horizons Arrives at Pluto · 26:12 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: After nine years of traveling through the dark, NASA’s New Horizons has finally arrived at Pluto. This historic flyby marks the first time humanity has ever seen this frigid dwarf planet and its moons up close, revealing a world far more complex than we ever imagined.

On July 14, 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft reached its closest point to Pluto, passing approximately 7,750 to 7,800 miles above the surface. This encounter was the culmination of a massive nine-year, three-billion-mile trek that began in January 2006. The mission was designed to study Pluto, a relic from the solar system's formation, and its five moons, including the largest, Charon.

The data collected during this historic flyby provided immediate insights into Pluto's geology. Images captured by the spacecraft revealed distinct light and dark patches across the surface, which scientists believe are caused by geological differences. These observations have already begun to reshape our understanding of Pluto's size and its atmosphere.

New Horizons is a cornerstone of NASA's New Frontiers program, a series of competitively selected, principal investigator-led missions. Beyond Pluto, the spacecraft was designed to explore the Kuiper Belt, a distant region of icy bodies extending from about 30 AU near Neptune to about 50 AU from the Sun. In early 2019, the spacecraft achieved another milestone by performing the first close exploration of a second Kuiper Belt Object, Arrokoth (2014 MU69), which remains the most distant object ever explored up close.

The spacecraft's journey has continued well beyond Pluto. By October 2024, New Horizons had traveled to a distance 60 times farther from the Sun than Earth, placing it twice as far out as Pluto was during its 2015 encounter.
