The intense countdown to orbital docking and the final preparations for Crew-13

In short: Spaceflight preparation is a meticulous dance of ceremonies, quarantine, and precision maneuvers. As new crews move from training centers to launch sites, they face a rigorous schedule of readiness reviews and biological safeguards to ensure the International Space Station remains a healthy, functional laboratory.

The journey to the International Space and Space Station involves distinct phases of preparation depending on the mission. On 16 May, conventional rites were held at Russia's Star City Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre for the Expedition 36/37 team. Following these rituals, members such as Soyuz Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin, NASA's Karen Nyberg, and ESA's Luca Parmitano traveled to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to finalize training before their May 29 launch in the Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft.

In contrast, the upcoming Crew-13 mission highlights the modern logistical complexities of space travel. Currently undergoing standard quarantine at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston to prevent the introduction of illness to the orbital outpost, the crew—including Commander Jessica Watkins and Pilot Luke Delaney—is scheduled to move to Kennedy Space Center on September 26. Their target launch window is as early as 11:10 a.m. EDT on October 1, launching from Space Launch Complex 40 in Florida.

Once the Falcon 9 rocket carries the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft into orbit, the mission enters a high-precision phase. If the October 1 launch proceeds, the spacecraft is expected to reach the station in less than nine hours, with docking planned for approximately 8 p.m. The Dragon will attach to the forward-facing port of the Harmony module. Upon successful arrival, the Crew-13 members will join Expedition 75, transitioning from travelers to active participants in long-duration scientific research and station maintenance.
