A cosmic firework display 20,000 light-years away
In short: To celebrate 25 years of the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA has unveiled a breathtaking image of stellar fireworks. This isn't just art; it is a window into a raucary star-birthing ground where massive stars sculpt the very fabric of the nebula.
The centerpiece of this anniversary image is Westerlund 2, a massive star cluster containing approximately 3,000 stars. Discovered in the 1960s by Swedish astronomer Bengt Westerlund, this cluster resides within the Gum 29 nebula in the constellation Carina. Located 20,000 light-years from Earth, the cluster is a relatively young feature in astronomical terms, measuring between 6 and 13 light-years across and aged at about 2 million years.
The visual complexity of the nebula—featuring pillars, ridges, and valleys—is driven by extreme physical forces. The cluster's most massive stars emit intense ultraviolet light and hurricane-force winds of charged particles. These winds etch into the surrounding hydrogen gas cloud, creating shockwaves that may trigger new generations of star birth. Within the landscape, red dots represent a population of even younger stars, aged between 1 and 2 million years, which are still encased in cocoons of gas and dust and have yet to ignite their hydrogen cores.
Capturing this level of detail required a sophisticated blend of light spectrums. Astronomers used Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 to pierce through thick layers of cosmic dust using near-infrared light, revealing the dense central concentration of stars. This was combined with visible-light data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys. In the resulting tapestry, reddish hues indicate the presence of hydrogen, while bluish-green tones signify oxygen. This international collaboration between NASA and the ESA allows scientists to study how such clusters form before their stars disperse into interstellar space.
