A journey to the oldest rocks on the Martian surface
In short: NASA's Opportunity rover has reached the rim of Endeavour crater. This trek is significant because it provides access to geological formations that predate any other rocks the rover has encountered on Mars.
After an eleven-mile journey from Victoria crater, the rover arrived at a location nicknamed "Spirit Point," a tribute to its decommissioned twin, Spirit. The destination, Endeavour crater, measures 14 miles in diameter.
The mission's primary objective at this site is to study the ridges along the crater's western rim. These outcrops are notable for being older than any other geological features Opportunity has previously explored, offering a deeper look into the planet's history.
