A critical milestone for humanity's journey to the Red Planet
In short: NASA's Orion spacecraft recently completed its first flight test, marking a pivotal step in the agency's plans to send humans to deep space. This mission serves as a primary rehearsal for the journey to Mars.
Launched on December 5 at 7:05 a.m. EST from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the Orion Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1) utilized a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket. The 4.5-hour mission was designed to test the new deep space capsule's capabilities before it is used for long-duration missions.
The flight concluded with a planned splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. As a foundational test, EFT-1 validates the systems necessary for NASA to eventually transport astronauts beyond Earth's orbit to Mars.
