The universe may lack the properties we see with our eyes

In short: If you aren't looking at an apple, is it still red? In our daily lives, we assume the world exists independently of our observation. However, quantum physics suggests a startling alternative: the universe might not be "locally real," meaning objects may lack definite properties until they are measured.

The concept of "local realism" relies on two main pillars. First, "realism" is the idea that objects have fixed properties regardless of whether they are being observed. Second, "locality" is the principle that objects can only be influenced by their immediate surroundings and that no influence can travel faster than the speed of light. For centuries, this was the standard framework for understanding the physical world, famously championed by Albert Einstein, who questioned if the moon exists when no one is looking at it.

However, experiments in quantum physics have shown that these two principles cannot both be true. Research into entangled light has demonstrated that the universe violates "Bell inequalities," a mathematical framework established by John Stewart Bell in the early 1960s. Such breaches demonstrate that external environments do not exclusively shape entities, which might possess no fixed characteristics until observed. This discovery was so significant that it led to the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded to John Clauser, Alain Aspect, and Anton Zeilinger for their pioneering work with entangled photons.

While this challenges our common sense, it does not necessarily mean the universe is a computer simulation. Recent research from UBC Okanagan, involving scientists like Dr. Mir Faizal and Dr. Lawrence M. Krauss, suggests that reality is built on a "Platonic realm" of pure information. Using Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, they argue that reality requires a "non-algorithmic understanding" that no computer can replicate. This suggests that while the universe isn't "locally real" in the way we perceive it, it is also not a computable simulation, but something deeper and more complex.
