How to navigate a Hohmann transfer using only an EVA suit
In short: When a spacecraft lacks a spare seat, returning home requires a precise orbital maneuver. This footage shows using an EVA pack to execute a Hohmann transfer orbit, moving from 205km to 400km.
To successfully rendezvous with a rocket from a lower orbit, the pilot must execute a Hohmann transfer. This maneuver requires approximately one-third of the fuel available in an EVA pack, which leaves sufficient reserves for the final rendezvous.
To achieve a successful intercept, the burn must start precisely when the lower orbit trails the higher one by 62 degrees. However, calculating this exact moment is difficult without the aid of onboard instruments.
