How Russian cargo ships serve as essential, disposable garbage trucks for the space station

In short: The International Space Station relies on a constant stream of supplies, but what happens to the waste? Russian Progress spacecraft perform a dual role: they deliver tons of vital cargo and later serve as incinerators, burning up in the atmosphere to dispose of the station's accumulated trash.

The Progress spacecraft, operated by the Russian space agency Roscosmos, are uncrewed vessels designed for a single-use mission. Launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop Soyuz rockets, these freighters are workhorses of the International Space Station (ISS) resupply effort. A typical mission begins with a multi-day journey to the station, where the craft automatically docks to deliver food, fuel, scientific hardware, and other essential supplies. For instance, Progress 86 delivered approximately 5,600 pounds of cargo in December 2023, while other missions have carried roughly three tons of supplies.

Once their cargo is unloaded, these ships do not sit idle. Instead, they are repurposed as orbital garbage trucks. Crew members load the empty vessels with trash and disposable items that are no longer needed on the station. When the time comes for departure, the ship undocks and moves away from the ISS. Flight controllers then command the craft to perform a deorbit maneuver, sending it on a final, destructive path back toward Earth.

The ultimate fate of these vessels is incineration. As they re-enter Earth's atmosphere, the friction and heat cause the spacecraft to burn up, effectively disposing of the station's waste over the Pacific Ocean. This process is a planned, routine operation, distinct from other vehicles like the SpaceX Dragon or the Russian Soyuz, which are designed to survive the return trip to Earth. By serving as both a delivery vehicle and a waste management system, the Progress fleet ensures the orbiting laboratory remains clean and operational for its crew.
