How cosmonauts manually dock unpiloted cargo ships in space

Russian Docking System Tested Aboard the ISS · 14:59 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: This video demonstrates a critical backup procedure where astronauts take manual control of an approaching spacecraft to ensure a safe connection to the International Space Station.

On July 1, Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka tested an upgraded rendezvous system using the Progress 62 cargo ship. The test involved undocking the craft to approximately 600 feet before re-approaching and re-docking under manual control. This manual override serves as a vital backup, allowing the crew to intervene if the automatic docking system fails during an approach.
