Pigeons may navigate the world using magnetic sensors hidden in their livers

Scientists Just Figured Out How Pigeons Navigate the Planet and its Super Weird · 13:47 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: For decades, the mystery of how homing pigeons navigate hundreds of miles has baffled scientists. While many assumed the secret lay in their eyes or beaks, new research suggests the answer is hidden deep inside their bodies—specifically within their immune systems.

Scientists have identified a previously unknown mechanism for magnetoreception, the ability to sense Earth's magnetic field. While it was long known that migratory birds, sea turtles, and even mole rats use this 'sixth sense' for navigation, the physical location of the sensor remained a mystery. Previous theories suggested light-sensitive molecules in the eyes or magnetic particles in the beak, but neither gained strong experimental confirmation.

The new research, published in the journal Science on May 28, points to the liver. Specifically, the birds possess iron-rich immune cells called macrophages. These cells accumulate iron as they break down old red blood cells. Because of this iron content, the cells exhibit a property known as 'superparamagnetism.' When a pigeon moves through the Earth's magnetic field, negatively charged particles within these special cells arrange in the same direction, potentially creating a physical basis for what was once thought to be a mere 'gut feeling.'

The significance of this discovery was confirmed through testing: pigeons injected with a drug to deplete these specific liver cells struggled to find their way home on overcast days. However, they were still able to navigate once the sun came out, suggesting they use these liver cells as an internal compass specifically when they cannot rely on solar cues. Furthermore, because these macrophages cluster near nerve fibers, researchers believe the liver cells may relay directional information directly to the brain.

This finding represents a major breakthrough in biology, combining expertise in immunology, physics, and animal behavior. It reveals an unexpected connection between the immune system and environmental sensing, providing a workable solution to a century-old mystery regarding how animals perceive the planet's magnetic field.
