Three Space Shuttle Veterans Inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame
In short: NASA honors three veteran astronauts for their contributions to the space shuttle program. This induction ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center highlights the legacy of explorers who helped shape American space history through multiple missions and command roles.
The 2012 induction ceremony welcomed Franklin Chang Díaz, Kevin Chilton, and Charles Precourt into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. Chang Díaz is noted for his seven space shuttle flights and over 1,600 hours in space. Chilton served as the pilot for the maiden flight of Endeavour, STS-49, and later commanded STS-76. Precourt completed four shuttle missions, serving as a mission specialist, pilot, and commander.
These three men represent the eleventh group of shuttle astronauts to receive this honor. With their inclusion, the Hall of Fame now contains 82 space explorers, joining those from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz programs.
