The engine that powered the Shuttle is heading to Mars

Smoke and fire RS 25 rocket engine test · 46:33 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch the raw power of the RS-25 rocket engine as it undergoes rigorous developmental testing. This isn't just a history lesson; it is a preview of the propulsion technology required to send humans to deep space.

On August 13, NASA conducted a 535-second developmental test firing of the RS-25 engine at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. This marked the sixth test in a specific series of seven designed to validate the hardware's reliability.

While the RS-25 was the primary engine for the Space Shuttle, it is now being repurposed for the Space Launch System (SLS). Four of these engines will power the core stage of the SLS, providing the thrust necessary to transport astronauts to destinations as distant as Mars and nearby asteroids.
