China plans to transform its T-shaped space station into a cross
In short: The Tiangong space station is currently a three-module orbital outpost, but China's vision for the future involves a significant structural evolution. By upgrading core modules and introducing new versatile spacecraft, the nation aims to scale up scientific research and lunar exploration capabilities significantly.
China has been operating its completed Tiangong space station in low Earth orbit for nearly two years. A T-shaped layout comprising three modules was completed during November 2022, following the addition of the Mengtian science module. However, the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) is already planning several steps to expand these capabilities.
A primary goal for the station's evolution involves updating the Tianhe core module. This upgrade is intended to transition the station from its current T-shape into a 'cross shape' or 'Double-T shape.' Such a structural change is not merely aesthetic; it is designed to accommodate more space science experiment racks and facilitate large extravehicular experiments, thereby extending the overall scale of operations aboard the outpost.
Parallel to these structural upgrades, China is developing the Mengzhou, a versatile and partially reusable spaceship. This spacecraft will feature two variants: one specifically for transporting seven astronauts to the new space station missions and another capable of carrying three astronauts to the moon. The Mengzhou is slated for its full debut flight around 2027, launched by a low Earth orbit variant of the Long March 10 rocket.
These developments represent a broader push in the global Space Race, which focuses on human missions to explore the universe and colonize destinations like Mars and the Moon. While China expands Tiangong, other entities like SpaceX, NASA, and Blue Origin continue to compete in the race for lunar and Martian presence.
