A massive engine test pushes the limits of rocket propulsion technology

Space Launch System Booster Passes Major Ground Test · 3:00 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: NASA's largest and most powerful rocket booster recently completed a critical two-minute ground test. By simulating the exact burn duration required for a launch, engineers verified the hardware's ability to generate 3.6 million pounds of thrust, a vital step toward sending the Orion spacecraft to Mars and beyond.

At the Orbital ATK facility in Promontory, Utah, engineers successfully conducted a major milestone test for the Space Launch System (SLS) booster. This test was designed to ensure the hardware could withstand the extreme conditions of deep space missions, including future journeys to an asteroid and Mars. To simulate the highest end of the propellant temperature range, the 1.6 million pound booster had to be heated to 90 degrees Fahrenheit for months before the firing. The testing process involved heating the massive component to verify its performance at the upper limit of its accepted propellant temperature range. This ensures the hardware remains reliable under extreme thermal conditions.

The performance data gathered during the two-minute burn is essential for refining analytical models. During the test, internal temperatures soared to more than 5,600 degrees, while engineers monitored over 531 instrumentation channels to assess approximately 102 design objectives. This included verifying ballistic performance requirements, such as pressure and thrust, as well as testing upgrades like a new nozzle design and improved internal motor insulation and liner.

This successful firing is one of two planned qualification tests. Following the successful completion of these tests, the flight hardware will be shipped to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A subsequent cold-temperature test, targeting 40 degrees Fahrenheit, is planned for early 2016 to verify performance at the low end of the propellant temperature range. This development represents years of work involving more than 500 suppliers to build what NASA considers a national asset for human exploration.
