The orbital dance of space logistics: why cargo ships must leave

In short: Space stations are not permanent parking lots. To keep the International Space Station (ISS) running, cargo ships must perform a precise choreography of docking, unloading, and departure. This cycle ensures a steady flow of life-sustaining supplies while clearing the path for the next generation of orbital logistics.

The logistics of the ISS rely on a revolving door of cargo craft, such as the Russian Progress series and the European Space Agency's 'Albert Einstein' Automated Transfer Vehicle. These ships dock at specific ports, like the Zvezda Service Module or the Pirs module, to deliver essential supplies including food, rocket fuel, air, and water. A typical mission, such as Progress M-13M, might stay docked for over 80 days to fulfill its delivery role before departing to make room for the next scheduled arrival.

Departure is a high-stakes maneuver. Once a craft like Progress 45P finishes its mission, it must move independently into a higher orbit to deploy secondary payloads, such as the Chibis-M microsatellite. This requires precise prograde burns—specific engine firings that can boost a craft's speed by dozens of miles per hour. These maneuvers ensure the ship reaches a safe altitude to release its cargo without interfering with the station's operations.

The final stage of the cycle is disposal. To prevent the accumulation of space debris, spent cargo ships perform a deorbital braking maneuver. For example, Progress 45P executed a maneuver lasting 3 minutes and 56 seconds to slow down by 280 mph, causing it to hit the upper fringes of the atmosphere and burn up. This process effectively clears the orbital path, allowing the next ship in the sequence, such as Progress M-14M, to prepare for its own launch and docking sequence.
