A Martian rover faces its toughest challenge in a solar winter

Spirit Hibernating, May Not Call Home · 3:10 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: NASA's Spirit rover has entered a critical low-power hibernation mode. This video explains why the rover is currently silent and how it must survive the harsh Martian environment to potentially resume its mission.

Spirit's power supply drops greatly between May and November as it failed to find a suitable incline for its fourth Martian winter. Solar panel output is constrained throughout this period by the sun's shallow position.

To survive, the rover suspends communications and most activities. This hibernation allows the remaining energy to be diverted toward recharging batteries, maintaining heat, and keeping the internal mission clock running.
