Earth’s past warming was natural, but today’s shift has a different cause

The Current Climate Change Is Caused By The Last Interglacial Cycle, Or Not? · 13:41 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Earth has spent millions of years cycling between ice ages and warmer interglacial periods. While the planet has warmed significantly before, scientists distinguish today's rapid temperature rise from the natural orbital mechanics that governed our geological past. Understanding these differences is key to predicting our future.

The Earth is currently in the Holocene, an interglacial period that began approximately 11,700 years ago as the last major glaciation ended. Throughout history, the planet has cycled between glacial and interglacial periods. During these warmer intervals, global temperatures increase, causing polar ice caps to shrink and sea levels to rise. For example, during the Last Interglacial (LIG), which occurred between 130,000 and 115,000 years Before Present (BP), polar temperatures were roughly 3-5 °C higher than they are today, and global sea levels were at least 6.6 meters above current levels.

The primary driver of the Last Interglacial was Earth's orbital configuration. Specifically, the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit during that time was more than twice its present value, which altered the distribution of solar radiation. In contrast, the warming observed in the 21st century is driven by greenhouse gas emissions. While the LIG serves as a vital proxy for studying ice-sheet sensitivity—such as the 50-60% retreat of Antarctic sea ice—the underlying mechanisms of these two warming events are fundamentally different.

Paleoclimate research reveals that Earth's climate has fluctuated wildly even in the last 1% of its history, with mean temperature changes of 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists also study the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, a mysterious shift about 1 million years ago where interglacial cycles slowed from 41,000 years to roughly 100,000 years. This transition remains enigmatic because no obvious orbital shifts occurred, leading researchers to investigate ocean circulation and ice sheet feedbacks as potential primary drivers.
