In short: At the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the Soyuz TMA-18M has begun its final preparations for flight. This mission carries a specialized international crew to the International Space Station, including a commander from Roscosmos and engineers from the European and Kazakh space agencies, marking a critical step in the Expedition 45 mission cycle.

The Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft underwent critical assembly at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. On August 30, the spacecraft was mated to its booster rocket. The following day, August 31, the combined vehicle was transported to the launch pad via railcar. This sequence is essential to ensure the spacecraft is ready for its scheduled departure on September 2, Kazakh time, to join the International Space Station.

The crew composition for this mission highlights the international cooperation required for modern orbital operations. Sergei Volkov, a Soyuz Commander from Roscosmos (the Russian Federal Space Agency), will command the flight. He will be joined by two flight engineers: Andreas Mogensen, representing the European Space Agency (ESA), and Aidyn Aimbetov, representing the Kazakh Space Agency (Kazcosmos).

While the mission's duration varies significantly for the crew members, the core objective remains the same: supporting the ongoing scientific and operational needs of the orbital complex. For this specific rotation, Sergei Volkov is scheduled to spend six months aboard the station. In contrast, the visiting engineers, Mogensen and Aimbetov, are slated for a much shorter stay of only eight days on board the station.

This mission follows a period of significant activity for the Expedition 45 crew, including the return of NASA Flight Engineer Kjell Lindgren. Lindgren completed a 141-day mission, landing in Kazakhstan at approximately 7:12 p.m. local time. Such rotations are vital for maintaining the continuous human presence required for the station's complex scientific and logistical operations.
