NASA's strategic roadmap for a human mission to the Red Planet

In short: While Mars is currently inhabited entirely by robots, NASA is laying the groundwork for a human arrival. Through a deliberate stepping-stone approach, the agency is leveraging existing robotic explorers to prepare for the ambitious leap from asteroid flybys to a crewed Martian surface.

NASA’s strategy for Mars involves a phased progression using all available exploration resources. The agency has outlined a path that includes human missions to an asteroid by 2025, serving as a precursor to much more complex human missions to Mars in the 2030s. This approach relies heavily on the success of current robotic pathfinders, such as the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers, which are currently investigating different regions of the planet about 2,300 miles apart.

A critical component of this preparation is the Mars Sample Return campaign. This multi-mission concept aims to bring carefully selected geological samples, currently being collected by the Perseverance rover, back to Earth. These samples are intended for scrutiny in terrestrial laboratories, a process that scientists believe will revolutionize our understanding of the solar system and provide essential data for human exploration.

The technological foundation is being built by an active fleet of five spacecraft, including two surface rovers and three orbiters, which work in tandem to relay data to Earth. Even recent setbacks have provided scientific milestones; for instance, the Ingenuity helicopter, despite being grounded by a broken rotor, achieved a record-breaking 1.8-mile distance for its final communication with Perseverance on November 26, 2024. As these robotic missions continue to map the Martian terrain and climate, they bridge the gap between our current robotic presence and the eventual arrival of astronauts.
