The solar system's invisible boundary is a graveyard of cosmic debris

The Invisible Wall Around The Solar System To Colonize Space: The Oort Cloud · 18:15 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Beyond the reach of our planets lies a vast, frozen shell of icy objects. This is the Oort Cloud, a celestial frontier so distant that even light takes weeks to traverse it. It represents the ultimate outer limit of our Sun's gravitational influence.

The Oort Cloud is a theorized collection of icy objects that serves as the solar system's most distant region. To grasp its scale, one must look past the Kuiper Belt—a disc of debris beyond Neptune—and into a sphere extending perhaps one-quarter to halfway to the next star. While Pluto orbits between 30 and 50 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, the Oort Cloud's inner edge begins between 2,000 and 5,000 AU, with its outer reaches stretching between 10,000 and 100,000 AU.

The formation of this 'invisible wall' is a story of gravitational violence. Roughly 4.6 billion years ago, the same material that formed our planets left behind chunks called planetesimals. The massive gravity of the planets, particularly Jupiter, acted like a cosmic slingshot, scattering these objects in every direction. Some were ejected into deep space, but others were flung into wildly eccentric orbits. Eventually, the tidal forces of the galaxy itself tugged on these wandering objects, settling them into the borderlands where the planets could no longer disturb them.

The Oort Cloud is the primary source of long-period comets. While planets share a common orbital plane with short-period comets from the Scattered Disc or Kuiper Belt, long-period comets enter from all points across the heavens. Their orbits can last thousands of years. Because of the immense distances involved, even NASA's Voyager 1, traveling at one million miles a day, would not reach the Oort Cloud for about 300 years.
