Could the ultimate goal of intelligence be total energy mastery?

The Kardashev Scale: Type 1 To Type 7 Civilizations And Reverse Scale | 4K · 45:48 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: In 1964, astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev proposed a yardstick to measure how advanced a civilization truly is. He argued that as societies grow, their hunger for energy becomes the defining characteristic of their progress—a trajectory that could eventually lead a species from planetary control to cosmic transcendence.

The Kardashev Scale categorizes civilizations based on their ability to harness energy. A Type 1 civilization can capture all the energy available on its home planet. Humanity has not yet reached this milestone, as our current technological footprint is still relatively small compared to the total planetary output. Moving up the scale, a Type 2 civilization would master the entire energy output of its solar system, while a Type 3 civilization would harness the energy of its entire galaxy.

The scale extends into speculative territory with higher classifications. A Type 7 civilization is described as reaching a state where it could oversee or 'be' the Omniverse—a collection encompassing every universe, multiverse, and dimension. This level of advancement represents a transition from mere technological mastery to something approaching the divine, transcending physical boundaries to interact with all possible realities.

However, the scale relies on a specific assumption: that intelligent life possesses an insatiable appetite for expansion and energy consumption. Critics note that this may be a human-centric bias. An advanced extraterrestrial intelligence might prioritize different goals entirely, perhaps choosing to coexist with their environment rather than transforming galaxies into supercomputers or pursuing intergalactic imperialism.

The concept also includes a 'reverse scale' ranging from Type -0 to -3, acknowledging the progression of life from simple organisms to complex societies. By framing progress through energy, Kardashev provided a framework for searching for extraterrestrial life; if we know how much energy a civilization needs to survive and expand, we can better predict where they might be hiding in the cosmos.
