Rescuing the lost high-resolution history of the Moon

The Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project · 16:01 · Video: Scott Manley · Watch at the source

In short: In the 1960s, NASA mapped the lunar surface to find Apollo landing sites. Now, a dedicated team is working to recover and restore the original data from aging magnetic tapes.

The Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project, involving the team at Skycorp, focuses on extracting and improving upon original mission data by restoring old tape machines. This effort includes significant work on historical imagery, such as the first photo of Earth from lunar orbit, captured by Lunar Orbiter 1 on August 23, 1966. While the original mission provided a remarkable view, the full resolution of this Earthrise image was never retrieved until it was restored in 2008 by the project at NASA Ames Research Center.
