The 66-million-year reset that paved the way for mammals

In short: After the dinosaurs vanished, Earth became a vacant laboratory for evolution. The Paleogene Era wasn't just a period of recovery; it was a massive biological pivot where small, primitive creatures seized the void left by giants to build the modern world we recognize today.

The Paleogene Period began following one of Earth's most severe cataclysms: the K–T extinction event approximately 66 million years ago. This global mass extinction eliminated roughly 80 percent of all animal species, including nearly all dinosaurs and many marine invertebrates like ammonoids and belemnoids. While land plants fared relatively better than animals, the event caused dramatic shifts in plant communities and wiped out significant lineages of archosaurs, leaving only the ancestors of modern birds and crocodilians to survive.

In the aftermath, it took more than two million years for Earth’s ecosystems to recover from this devastation. The Paleogene—comprising the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene Epochs—saw a rapid filling of these vacant niches. On land, primitive mammals and birds began to spread quickly. However, mammalian diversity remained modest initially; even the largest fauna were only about the size of a small pony. Meanwhile, forests transitioned from fern-dominated landscapes to those featuring flowering plants, conifers, and deciduous trees.

The era also redefined marine life. While many Mesozoic 'alien' forms like trilobites disappeared, planktonic foraminifera began new evolutionary paths. Bony fishes became the dominant sea dwellers, a position they hold to this day. This period serves as the foundational chapter of the Cenozoic Era, often called the 'Age of Mammals,' marking the transition from an era dominated by reptiles to one defined by the recognizable organisms that inhabit our planet today.
