Could AI surpass human intelligence and create a catastrophic future?
In short: As artificial intelligence grows more sophisticated, a growing number of experts warn that we may be approaching a tipping point. While the technology offers immense potential, it also carries a dark side that could lead to machines being in control, potentially rendering humanity obsolete.
The concern regarding AI's trajectory is not merely speculative for some of the world's leading researchers. Geoffrey Hinton, often called "the godfather of AI," notably left his position at Google in April 2023 specifically to warn about these dangers. He expressed that the idea of machines becoming smarter than humans is no longer a distant possibility but a looming reality that threatens our ability to maintain control.
To quantify these fears, a 2023 survey found that 36 percent of AI experts believe development could result in a "nuclear-level catastrophe." This sentiment is significant enough that nearly 28,000 people, including figures like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, signed an open letter by the Future of Life Institute calling for a six-month moratorium on new advanced AI development.
Research from MIT Sloan and the University of Queensland utilized the Delphi method to survey 272 international experts on risks between 2025 and 2030. Under a "business-as-usual" scenario, they judged that 18 out of 24 risk domains had at least a 10% probability of causing catastrophic outcomes. Such results are categorised as damages surpassing $100 billion in monetary loss, over 1 million fatalities, or equivalent intangible civilizational-scale impacts.
Five main hazards were pinpointed by specialists for the upcoming five-year period: concentrated power, false information, cyberattacks and weapons, competitive pressures, plus dangerous capabilities. While pragmatic mitigation can lower these estimates, it does not eliminate the risk entirely. The study highlights that those most vulnerable to these harms are often the least positioned to address them.
