Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for a thousand times longer than humans
In short: This timelapse visualizes the rise and fall of dinosaur species across millions of years. It provides a necessary mental anchor to help us grasp the staggering scale of deep time.
The video explores the vast temporal abyss of the Mesozoic Era, during which dinosaurs dominated every ecological niche on Earth. While humans have existed for only about 200,000 years, dinosaurs roamed the planet for over 160 million years.
This means their reign lasted nearly a thousand times longer than our entire history as a species. During this period, mammals were relegated to supporting roles while bizarre and majestic creatures occupied the skies, waters, and continents.
