A radar eye that sees through clouds and darkness

Timelapse: Sentinel-1B prepares for liftoff (April 2016) · 3:09 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch the final moments of Sentinel-1B as it prepares to join a global constellation designed to monitor our changing planet from orbit.

Launched on April 25, 2016, from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, Sentinel-1B serves as the second half of a twin satellite mission. By orbiting 180° apart, it works alongside its predecessor, Sentinel-1A, to provide optimized global coverage for the Copernicus programme.

The satellites utilize advanced radar technology to image the Earth's surface through rain and cloud cover. This capability allows for consistent environmental monitoring regardless of lighting conditions, providing critical data for various services aimed at improving daily life.
