Students in Richmond Connect Live with an Astronaut Orbiting Earth
In short: Over 200 students at the Science Museum of Virginia engaged in a live, Spanish-language conversation with NASA astronaut Joe Acaba while he was aboard the International Space Station. This event highlights how NASA connects young learners with active space missions to inspire interest in science and technology.
The students involved in this session were part of NASA's Summer of Innovation project, an initiative designed to provide middle schoolers and educators with hands-on STEM experiences during their summer break. By facilitating direct communication with astronauts, the program aims to make complex space science accessible and engaging for the next generation of researchers.
Joe Acaba, serving as a flight engineer for Expedition 32, reached the space station on May 17 alongside cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin. The crew was scheduled to expand later that month with the arrival of three additional international space travelers: NASA's Sunita Williams, the Japanese space agency's Akihiko Hoshide, and cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko.
