The logistical cycle of orbital waste and atmospheric disposal

"Waste Away" in Departed Space Station Freighter · 7:25 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Space travel requires a constant cycle of delivery and disposal. This video tracks the final mission of a Russian resupply vehicle as it transitions from a vital lifeline to a vessel of waste.

The Progress 49 vehicle spent five months docked to the International Space Station, delivering 2.5 tons of essential supplies including food and fuel.

After its primary mission, the unpiloted vehicle was loaded with trash and prepared for deorbiting. Before its final destruction, the craft performed a series of engine firings to provide Russian ground controllers with critical engineering data. On 21 April, the craft is slated to incinerate within the atmosphere above the Pacific Ocean.
