The celestial dimmer switch: why Betelgeuse’s brightness is so erratic

We Finally Know Why Betelgeuse Behaves So Strangely · 37:11 · Video: Astrum · Watch at the source

In short: For years, astronomers have watched the massive red giant Betelgeuse fade and brighten unpredictably. Now, new evidence suggests the star isn't just acting out on its own. A hidden companion, nicknamed 'Betelbuddy,' may be leaving a visible wake through the star's massive atmosphere.

Betelgeelse, a prominent red giant in the constellation Orion, has long puzzled astronomers with its irregular luminosity. The star appears to fluctuate in brightness as if controlled by a heavenly dimmer switch. While many have speculated about the star's impending supernova, the mystery of its recent erratic activity has found a potential explanation in a companion star. This massive neighbor in our night sky is currently considered to be on the verge of a supernova. Scientists continue to investigate whether this dramatic explosion could occur within our own lifetime.

Using data from the Hubble Space Telescope alongside ground-based observatories, researchers monitored Betelgeuse for nearly eight years. They identified light patterns that suggest the presence of an unseen partner. An astronomer from the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, Andrea Dupree, refers to this event as a ripple effect. As the companion moves, it creates a wake in Betelgeuse’s atmosphere, much like a boat traveling through water. The lead author of the study, Andrea Dupree, notes that the data reveals a specific ripple effect within the stellar atmosphere. This phenomenon is captured through long-term observation of the star's light fluctuations.

This discovery, detailed in a preprint paper for the Astrophysical Journal, provides a mechanical explanation for the star's dimming. The interaction between the two stars creates detectable disturbances in the light we receive. While Betelgeuse remains a massive star on the brink of a spectacular death, the presence of 'Betelbuddy' offers a new lens through which to view the complex dynamics of stellar atmospheres and binary systems. The findings regarding this companion star are presented in a preprint paper. This research aims to clarify the strange, erratic activity that has characterized the star's recent behavior.
