The icy barrier between us and Europa's hidden ocean may be harder to breach than imagined
In short: Europa is a prime candidate for extraterrestrial life, housing a salty liquid ocean beneath a 20 km thick ice shell. However, new simulations suggest that the very water we hope to sample might be physically blocked from reaching the surface by its own freezing properties.
Astrobiologists prioritize Europa because it possesses the three fundamental ingredients for life as we know it: liquid water, carbon-based molecules, and an energy input. While Mars was once habitable, it lost its atmosphere to solar wind; Venus became a high-pressure hellscape. In contrast, Europa maintains a hidden sea beneath its frozen crust. Recent data from the James Webb Space Telescope has bolstered this interest by identifying carbon dioxide in the 'chaos terrain' of Tara Regio. This carbon likely originated in the subsurface ocean rather than from meteorites, providing observational evidence of the chemical diversity essential for life.
The primary challenge remains the 20 km thick ice shell. Scientists previously hoped that water from the deep ocean could rise through fractures to form shallow reservoirs, which would be much easier for spacecraft to probe. However, research led by Lujendra Ojha at Rutgers University suggests this journey is unlikely. Computer simulations show that as turbulent water rises, it rapidly loses heat and forms ice crystals. These crystals can clog fractures within hours, effectively sealing off the deep ocean from the surface.
This finding introduces a significant nuance for future exploration: if a spacecraft detects shallow liquid pockets, they might not be connected to the moon's global ocean. Instead, these reservoirs could be isolated pockets formed by local melting of the ice shell. Because the most scientifically compelling environment is the deep, salty ocean with its rocky seafloor, discovering disconnected surface water may offer little information about whether Europa can actually host life.
