The first time humans have witnessed a supernova in real time
In short: For the first time in history, astronomers have captured a star exploding as it happens. This video explores the mechanics of one of the universe's most violent events and why its actual shape defied scientific expectations.
While supernovas are well-documented phenomena, capturing the progression of a stellar explosion in real time provides a rare front-row seat to cosmic destruction. The footage reveals that the geometry of the blast was unexpected, prompting researchers to investigate the complex inner workings of the explosion.
The video examines what is happening inside the blast to reconcile these visual observations with existing models of stellar death.
